National Hot Air Balloon Classic

Hot Air Balloons - they are really great to see.  Here in Iowa at Indianola is held the yearly National Hot Air Balloon Classic, and this year (2001) had over 100 entrants.  It is held in August, and I went on the last day (8-11-01) both in the morning and evening.  The morning held a contest in which each balloonist dropped a baggie between the edges of two circles, one inside the other.  To approach the target on the ground, each balloonist would lift off in turn, then ride the air currents a short way, come back in, lower the balloon and drop the baggie.  In contrast of each balloon taking off in turn, the evening show was all of them taking off in a short span of time - many of them taking off at nearly the same time!  That was quite a sight; to see all those hot air balloons in the sky, just hanging there like bright, multi-colored hand-painted stars floating in the blue sky.

Of course, I took a whole lot of pics of the event, the digital ones are shown here.  I'll have the 35mm ones later this month when I scan them in.  There are also two MPEG's taken with the Sony camera, just to give you a feel of the overall ambiance of the show.
