Introduction - Steve's Desktop Photography & Digital Photographer

Welcome!  If you've arrived by surfing or through a link from another website, you've come to a well known and extensive website on Photoshop, digital imaging and real-world working knowledge using computer based photography.  Through my experience, I base my tips, tricks, tutorials and information on how I use photography and computers to meet my own real-world needs as a long-time amateur photographer and computer 'craftsperson'.  I've had my own darkroom before home computers were common place, and I've developed negative film, slide film, and did color and black & white printing.  Over time I slowly did less and less darkroom work as the costs increased, but with the introduction of home computers and digital image editing, the darkroom came back in a whole new way with more and better control over image enhancement than ever.  If you're just starting out, or the "at-home pro" like I am, you'll find much of interest to you here.  I still believe that sharing information, knowledge and experience ought to be free, and you'll find plenty of both here.  You can also join my DigiPhots mailing list, sponsored by Topica at the bottom of this page.  As always, I welcome comments and suggestions on any topic at any time about my experiences and this website.

History

My website's roots sprang out of the lack of web-based information for the PC version of Adobe Photoshop in January 1996.  I started with one small page containing all the PC related links I could find on the Net with regards to Photoshop.  I've been a serious amateur photographer since 1972, and as I my experience grew with Photoshop, my website evolved and reflected my current interests and discoveries, growing to what it is today.  I am not a 'professional' Photoshop user, which means getting paid, but it, and computers,  have afforded me the ability to get out of the darkroom and digitally edit my photos in ways the red-light-and-wet photographic darkroom never could.

What's Here on the Website

Probably the most popular pages are the ones that have free filter-factory made filters for downloading.  There are over 1600 filters, and each filter has a PC and Mac version.  I also feature my photography efforts on a rotational basis, taken with either a Nikon F100 35mm film camera, Sony Mavica MVC-CD1000 or Olympus 2500L digital cameras.  Most of my subject matter is outdoor nature/scenics, textures and seasonal.  Nearly all shots are taken in Iowa, USA, my home state.  Each month, I add one of the photos I've taken as free wallpaper backgrounds for the visitor.  There is also an assortment of tips, tricks and tutorials on using Adobe Photoshop, taking pictures and using digital cameras.  There are also various FYI's - For Your Information - pages on plugins I use and how to use them with Photoshop.  I'm also a student of biology, and some website areas will undoubtedly reflect this.  Occasionally, some of my other interests and hobbies will sneak in and make an appearance, so please look around to check What's New.

How to navigate this website:

Everything is now accessible from the inline frames menu at the top of every page.  The menu is now Java script enabled, and I will probably keep this menu system for a long time to come.  It has so far been the best way to show all links to all pages.  Links throughout the site are in small caps, and have mouse rollover effects to let you know it is a link.  You need to be using the latest in browsers, as I'm using frames, cascading style sheets, Java, Flash and DHTML.

Please have a look around using the menu, there are probably pages here you didn't know existed.

Instead of having separate sections, I've blended all the pages into one large continuous website, all inter-linked when needed.  Going this route will allow me to easily add content of different themes.

Enjoy my website, and if you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know.

DigiPhots is a forum for discussion of digital and film photography in general, photo techniques, equipment, etc. plus the use of image software, using images in software, and getting it all to work with our computers, both PC's and Mac's. Posting of images to share is welcomed and encouraged!
