The Picture Heard 'Round the Parking Lot

Using my infinite wisdom and a propensity to pull one over on people when need be, I created a photograph.  Not just any photograph mind you, but one that depicted my car as it 'fell' into one of those 'huge' parking lot craters.  This image was published in the Kirkwood newspaper, and created such a ruckess the parking lot was repaired in record time.

I did not have Photoshop, or any image editor in the fall of 1981 to use - I had to do all of it in the darkroom and keep reshooting the results.  I first shot the chuck hole, then my car off by itself, then a row of cars with an empty space that I could line my car up with.  I shot in the middle of the day to minimize shadow touch up.  After printing all of these shots, I ended up with three images - the parking lot, the chuckhole and my car.  After printing, I scissor cut my car out of the print.  I then cut a horizontal slit into the parking lot and chuck hole pictures, taping them together.  I then slipped my car into the slit, positioning it until it looked realistic.  Using a yellow hiliter magic marker, I added shadow detail under my car and at the edge of the 'hole'.   I then placed the whole newly made collage on the wall, and reshot it.  When I printed it in the darkroom, I used a lot of dodging and burning to get the edges to blend well.  Back then I shot almost exclusively with black and white, usually Kodak Tri-X film.  So, if any of you have ever seen this picture in your travels, that is how it came about, and you have me to blame.
